| Major Recruiting Drive Underway for Parks and Wildlife - 09/02/10 |
The Minister for Environment, Parks and Heritage, Michelle O’Byrne, today said the Parks and Wildlife Service had begun one of its largest ever recruiting drives, with up to 30 positions available around Tasmania. Ms O’Byrne said the positions on offer included jobs for rangers, field officers and building supervisors. “The recruitment drive follows from the State Government funding an additional $10 million over four years, which provides for hiring of up to 30 additional staff. “This is a unique opportunity for people interested in helping to look after Tasmania’s natural environments and its cultural assets. “These additional staff will help us to work with the community and to maintain our roads, campgrounds, toilets, walking tracks and visitor centres.” “The Bartlett Labor Government is firmly committed to ensuring our National Parks and reserves continue to provide quality experiences for visitors and locals alike. “In addition to these 30 positions, 12 new fire-related positions were also created last month to boost the service’s firefighting capability.” “The positions are on top of $1.2 million for facility improvements to campsites and infrastructure on the State’s East Coast, complementing the new Bay of Fires National Park being established by the State Government.” Ms O’Byrne said the new positions were based in areas from from Arthur River to Cradle Mountain, Huonville, the Tasman Peninsula, Freycinet, St Helens, Mole Creek, Hobart and Scottsdale. “The Parks and Wildlife Service is looking for people that not only have a passion for Tasmania’s parks and reserves, but who have the skills and commitment to work with the community. “People have a perception that rangers’ main role is maintaining tracks and working with wildlife, however the reality is that in 2010 it’s much more about working with the community through environmental planning processes, to achieve conservation outcomes that have the support of the community.” “The Parks and Wildlife Service is looking for people with knowledge of practices related to management of reserved lands, however good interpersonal and communication skills are equally as important. “All of the positions involve participation in fire management activities, which requires a medical examination and fitness assessment.” Source: Tasmania Government |
